Employment Exams
Asbestos/Silica (Initial/Periodic Exam)
DEFINITION
Asbestosis is a progressive and disabling lung disease caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers. The fibers become lodged in the lungs and can cause scarring. This causes the lining of the lungs to thicken and the lungs to lose their ability to remove oxygen from the air. In addition, exposure to asbestos increases the risk of lung cancers called mesothelioma.
This is a screening examination to look for medical problems associated with asbestos exposure. Workers dealing with asbestos are required to take exams annually. A Termination of Employment examination is required of workers exposed to inhalation of asbestos. Besides pulmonary problems, asbestos workers have a higher risk of cancer of the digestive system.
The examination, OAR 437, DIV 2 (29 CFR 1910), is a comprehensive review of exposure history and a careful physical examination.
