CHEMISTRY SCREEN (CHEMISTRY PROFILE)
COMPLETE BLOOD COUNT
DEFINITION
Chemistry Screen/CBC with Manual Differential
The Chemistry screen is a blood test used to measure the following: blood glucose (sugar), electrolytes (sodium, potassium and phosphorus), kidney function, liver enzymes, protein content and fatty elements (cholesterol and triglycerides).
The complete blood count test measures the number (count) of the three cell components of blood: blood cells contain hemoglobin and carry oxygen to the cells. A low red blood count is called anemia. White blood cells fight off infection. Platelets are responsible for helping blood clot when there is a cut.
These two tests [chemistry screen and Complete Blood Count (CBC)] are ordered together with the following examinations: HazMat, Medical Surveillance, Emergency Response Team and Executive Physicals. These two tests are performed on an initial/baseline exam and then again annually. An elevated level on the test result could be a result of a chemical exposure and would prompt the physician to do further testing if indicated. A lipid panel is an added test to determine the percentage of both good and bad cholesterol and is often added to Executive and police examinations.
