DOT Exam Standards
DEFINITION
DOT exams, conducted in accordance with CFR 391 Subpart E – Physical Qualifications and Examinations, are offered at Cascade Occupational Medicine. The successfully completed exam allows us to issue the required medical examiner’s certificate that states the driver is physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle. All required components are completed in this exam, including vision testing, vital signs, and urine dip. Urine collection for drug testing can also be done at any one of our clinics.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR DOT EXAM
The DOT examination takes approximately 45 minutes. Please arrive approximately 15 minutes prior to your appointment time to complete your paperwork, or print the required forms and bring them completed to your appointment. If you wear corrective lenses when you drive please bring them with you to your appointment.
During your evaluation the Medical Assistant and/or Physician will:
- Measure your height, weight and pulse.
- Take your blood pressure reading.
- Collect a urine sample to check for sugar, protein, blood, specific gravity and PH.
- Listen to your heart and lungs.
- Examine your eyes, ears, nose and throat.
- Review your medical history as it relates to driving.
- Examine your abdomen
- Examine your extremities
- Examine your spine
- Check your flexibility and range of motion.
The physician will determine if you are physically qualified to drive a motor vehicle according to the requirements of the Department of Transportation if so, you will be given your card prior to leaving the clinic. If additional information is needed you will be asked to obtain that information and return it to the Physician performing your exam.
