DPSST - Police and Correction Officers
DEFINITION
Pre-placement examinations for police candidates share some of the features of standard pre-placement examinations. Required services are determined by the requesting agency in consultation with the requirements of the Department of Police Safety Standards and Training in Monmouth, Oregon. Many of these agencies will request extensive testing, including treadmill stress tests. The judgement required to evaluate these candidates is considerable and, therefore, only the most experienced occupational medicine physicians are involved in these examinations.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR POLICE OFFICER EXAMINATION
Please expect to be at the clinic for 2 to 3 hours. Please arrive 45 minutes early to complete paperwork. Please do not eat or drink anything but water 12-14 hours prior to your exam. Avoid loud noises (loud music, mowing the lawn etc) 16 hours prior to your exam. You will be having a treadmill test as part of your examination, please bring comfortable clothes and running shoes as well as a snack with you.
During your evaluation, the Medical Assistant will:
- Measure your height and weight
- Check your vision
- Check your hearing in an audiometric booth
- Take a blood pressure reading
- Perform a stress treadmill test
- Collect a urine sample to check for sugar, blood and protein
- Collect a urine drug screen
- Draw your blood for Chem Screen/CBC & Hepatitis C Antibody
During your evaluation the physician will:
- Review the history form you have completed
- Review your job description
- Examine your eyes, ears, nose and throat
- Examine your abdomen
- Examine your extremities
- Examine your thyroid
- Examine your spine
- Check your flexibility and range of motion
- Listen to your chest and heart
- Neurological examination to include Romberg test.
- Males will be given a hernia check
Upon completion of your examination your company will be notified if, in the opinion of the examining physician, you are or are not medically certified for the position you are applying for.
