ERT (Emergency Response Team)
Initial Exam
DEFINITION
These examinations are required of individuals who are part of an organized emergency response team. The team is called into action to contain and sometimes clean up hazardous chemical spills or leaks. These individuals are not usually exposed to hazardous chemicals in their daily work activities. The examination focuses on the individual’s ability to respond in an emergency situation. Therefore, the most critical elements of the examination are vision and hearing and the musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiopulmonary systems.
Also included are medical and work history, physical examination, urine dipstick (to check for diabetes and kidney disease) a baseline EKG. The company receives the Physician’s Written Opinion, stating that the employee is capable of working on the Emergency Response Team. In addition, a respirator certification is given. The worker receives a letter indicating the results of the same and any follow up recommendations.
