Employment Exams
Firefighter

DEFINITION

Fire Fighters are exposed to high stress and a multitude of chemicals in their work. Therefore, these exams are very similar to the Hazardous Materials Workers. A medical and work history is performed followed by a physical exam. In addition, these exams may include a vision assessment, an audiogram, blood tests (complete blood count and chemistry profile), urine dipstick, and EKG treadmill. Medical fitness is then communicated to the employer.

Depending upon the examination findings and/or the result of your pulmonary function test, your examination may also include a one or two view chest x-ray.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR FIREFIGHTER EXAM

Depending on what type of firefighter exam you are scheduled to have, you can expect to be at the clinic from 30 minutes up to 2 hours. Due to the various types of firefighter exams, your anticipated time spent in the clinic will be dictated by the following:

  • Are you scheduled for a “Career”, “New Hire”, “Volunteer”, or “Support Staff” exam?
  • Have you had your pre-physical work done?
  • When was your last stress EKG? This will also depend on your age.
  • Where you in an exposure fire since your last exam?
  • When was your last chest x-ray?

For more information regarding the specific components of a firefighter exam, or perhaps which exam pertains to you, please contact the Washington Square Clinic at 503-246-4104, or Dan Dotlich at 503-594-0571.
