Employment Exams
Pre-Employment Examinations
DEFINITION
Employees are sent for pre-employment examinations for a variety of reasons: to obtain baseline health information, to ensure proper placement of the employee with respect to any pre-existing medical condition or disability, to identify preventable medical conditions. The basic exam consists of a medical and work history, a hands on examination by the physician, a vision assessment and a urine test for diabetes and kidney function.
Specialized tests such as audiograms (hearing tests), drug screens and physical capacity evaluations can be added in keeping with individual company policies. OSHA may require a baseline audiogram or spiromety depending on the work site conditions.
It is very useful for the physician to have a job description, including environmental conditions, physical and chemical hazards, and any personal protective gear that may be required. If chemical hazards are present or the use of personal protective gear is required such as respirators then a higher level examination is more appropriate for example Medical Surveillance or Hazardous Materials examinations. DOT certification can be added without additional cost.
We recommend a Physical Capacity (Lift Test) for those positions requiring heavy lifting (50lbs or more).
Please refer to the Physical Capacity Testing for more information.
