SPIROMETRY

DEFINITION

A breathing test used to assess lung function performed on a devise called a spirometer. It is used to measure the Forced Vital Capacity and Forced Expiratory Flow in one second during a maximal forced exhalation. The test is repeated two or three times to achieve a degree of reproducibility that is acceptable according to established guidelines (NIOSH). Spirometry is required on all the following exams: Respirator, Asbestos, Emergency Response Team, HazMat, and Firefighter as a baseline and yearly test. This test is especially useful in detecting persons with obstructive airways such as from asthma or reactive airway disease. Low scores on spirometry may be an indicator that the worker would have difficulty adjusting to wearing a respirator.
