TREADMILL EKG
DEFINITION
This is an electrocardiogram taken continuously during exercise. The test starts with a resting EKG then the patient begins walking at 1.7 miles per hour at a 10% incline and progresses through 3 minute stages according to a protocol developed by Dr. Bruce. This test gives information regarding the health of the heart and cardiovascular system as well as the fitness level of the examinee. Treadmill EKGs are strongly encouraged at the initial evaluation for Police and Firefighter candidates, and for HazMat workers. Often theis examination is requested as part of the Executive Physical. Individuals with known heart disease or multiple coronary risk factors (diabetes, smoking, obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sedentary life style) may be referred by the occupational medicine physician to a cardiologist to perform this test.
